A permanent place to stay

For the past year, Road to Care has been renting a building complex 1km from the Uganda Cancer Institute to provide accommodations for patients while they undergo radiotherapy treatment.

In 2020, we were notified by our Director of Operations, Ndinawe Kateera that the floors of the building complex we were renting were damp, due to an issue with drainage. Despite many requests to the landlord, the issue was not addressed, and we were told that instead of repairing the drainage issue, the owner was deciding to sell the property…

After much discussion with all our partners in Uganda, we agreed that it would be best for the future of this program to purchase the current complex and repair it.

The hostel was acquired by Road to Care in 2020. Ndinawe Kateera oversaw the purchase and all the repairs. At his advice, we also installed solar panels and a battery-pack to solve a power-fluctuation issue in the building.

We are happy to announce that repairs are complete, the hostel is now dry. We no longer need to pay rent. We now have a permanent place to accommodate patients while they receive radiotherapy treatment!
