Esther’s story

Esther volunteered to be filmed by Road to Care to share her story with you. She was supported by Road to Care when the sole machine in Uganda broke down in 2016; Road to Care arranged to have her treatment completed in Nairobi. She has been disease-free now for over 9 years. She is cured!

It is now 2025/2026. The Uganda Cancer Institute has 3 working external beam radiotherapy machines. Every week, 3 new patients like Esther with curable cervical cancer travel from the rural regions in Uganda, many travelling >3 hours, to live one of Road to Care’s 2 radiotherapy hostels in Kampala while they receive treatment.

Over the past 16 years, together, over 1500 women have been able to receive curative treatment through this care pathway. Our goal for 2026 is to assist another 150 patients. Here is Esther’s story. Please help us reach our goal!
