Our partner, Hospice Africa is a local, Ugandan led organization that has provided palliative care services in Uganda since 1993.

The Road to Care program was developed in partnership with Hospice Africa to ensure that any patient with curable cervical cancer that was referred to them would be able to access curative cancer treatment.

Collaboration with Hospice Africa staff identified multiple barriers to care:

-        Accommodations in Kampala during treatment

-        Cost of living in Kampala during treatment

-        Cost of chemoradiotherapy treatment

-        Transportation

-        Work-up investigations

-        Communication with the cancer centre

-        Fear of leaving home and going to the capital city for months.

Since 2009, Road to Care’s director of operations, Ndinawe Kateera, has been working alongside Hospice Africa Uganda to address the above barriers. Educational materials were developed to show patients what treatment would be like, and where they would live during the months of therapy. Tests (ultrasounds, x-rays, biopsies) are done locally, and patients arrive in Kampala with a full workup already complete. Road to Care funding is disbursed to patients on treatment weekly by staff from Hospice Africa Uganda so that they can purchase their own food and supplies with dignity.

Road to Care operates two radiotherapy hostels located within walking distance to the Uganda Cancer Institute.

The majority of patients supported by Road to Care stay in our accommodations for approximately 2 months while they complete their chemoradiotherapy treatment.

Every $470 Canadian Dollars raised supports one patient’s journey from diagnosis to cure.

Thank you for supporting this collaborative work.
