Visiting the Road to Care Hostels
Written by Joda Kuk, March 2026
Road to Care operates two radiotherapy hostels that provide accommodations for women while they undergo medical treatment for cervical cancer.
As soon as we entered the premises of the first hostel, Jen, James and I were greeted with singing and dancing expressing heartfelt appreciation from the women staying there.
After the dance they had prepared for us, they received us with hugs.
Patients are encouraged to bring along one helper, so most had brought along a daughter. This really reminded me of the importance of what we are doing. By enabling women to be cured of cervical cancer, these mothers have more time with their children, and these children will continue to have their mothers.
As I walked through the hostel, I saw so many daughters caring for their moms. I saw these young women taking care of the cooking, the washing of bedding and clothes and providing their mothers with companionship.
When we entered Road to Care’s second radiotherapy hostel, we were once again greeted by mothers and daughters singing and dancing.
Coming to these hostels reminded me that our gifts have a real tangible effect on women lives here in Uganda. Every patient I met was so grateful that these hostels existed and that they didn’t have to pay a shilling to be there.
Thank you to all who have given generously to Road to Care to make this possible. Without these hostels, these women would be sleeping outdoors under trees for 2-3 months, or not getting treatment at all.
A big thank you to Miriam Donohoe, a supporter from Ireland, who is raising funds to cover the operational costs of these two hostels! Thank you to our friends from Ireland who are taking care of this part of the Road to Care. I am grateful beyond words.
Funds raised in Canada will continue to pay for medical investigations, upkeep for 2-3 months and radiotherapy treatment.
Together, we will continue making curative treatment for cervical cancer accessible to all women in Uganda!
“Webale Munonga!” - Thank you all So very much.
